Beginner steam bending

Editor's Choice - Jun 25, 2014

Inspired by the work of fellow member Kiefer, I spent some time experimenting. I made these steam bent “s” curves as part of a larger project I have started. That was a lot of fun! I’m now hunting for supplies to build a much larger steam system. I also plan to talk to the people at the mill and see if I can get some air dried stuff. These were made from KD cherry.

That looks very good but you should post the jig also I am sure there is a lot of interest .
Glad you tried this and hope you can find some air dried lumber .

Looks great! Can’t wait to see the project it’s for.

Between 1/16 and 3/32. I tried 1/8" but was getting some breakage on the tighter radius. The only jig I had was a few pieces of pvc pipe. I was lucky enough to have a piece of 2-1/2" PVC electrical conduit that fit perfectly over the 2" ABS with enough space for the wood. After bending it, I quickly snapped the “clamp” over it. It worked like a champ. I bent the larger radius on all four pieces at once around a 3" pvc pipe. I originally planned to laminate 4 pieces together, but discovered it would be too thick for what I wanted, so I’ll only need two. I need two complete laminations for the project, so I’m ready to glue them up.

it’s more fun to see the process with so many pictures.
Well done!

It was great you showed the whole process…thanks

The project is top secret ;) I have other components bent now including 1/4" ash and 1/2" cherry. If this works, I’ll have one very happy daughter!

A couple more components of the mystery project:

In the first two pics I used a combination of ABS pipe, 3/8 dowel rod, and wedges to get the shape I was after.
