I’ve been in a shlump recently, and haven’t really gone out into the shop in a month or so. A friend is starting his captains exam for the JFRD, and asked for a stand to help him study, so his neck wouldn’t get sore, and its kind of got me going again.
I borrowed the design from Marc Spagnuolo’s magazine rack on TheWoodWhisperer episode 71, and just modified it so that the two interlocking pieces would meet at 90 degrees, while holding the book at a comfortable 30 degrees. It comes back apart into two pieces easily, so that it can be transported to and from the station without getting damaged. I think if I did it again, I’d add some rare earth magnets in the top and bottom corners to hold the two halves together when transporting, and maybe route in a handle in the two pieces. He wanted it in a hurry, so I didn’t embellish this one. Finish is lacquer followed up with briwax.
Sorry for the photos. I’m investing in a backdrop and a couple of lights soon, so hopefully I’ll be able to get better pictures on future projects. Found a kit that comes with two backdrops, the stands for the backdrops, two tall light stands, with fixture, bulbs and umbrella diffusers, and a small stand with fixture and bulb for $107.00. Seems like a great deal.
