Dinner on the Lake of Fire

So called because I think it looks like a minimalist table perched on molten lava. It’s an old project but I thought it might be worth an airing

This is an EZ Mitre, Shell box (I’ll blog these constructio methods in due course)

Size : (top) 113mm square x 52mm high (pedestal base) 133mm square x 5mm high

Materials : Padauk, Ebony, Holly and Birch Ply

Glues : PVA, Spray Contact and CA

Finish : Spray Acrylic (satin finish)

At 3.5mm thick the top was too fragile so a 1.5mm Birch Ply liner was used (pic’ 4). Otherwise its solid wood construction. With a foam inner base liner and baise on the very bottom. I’ve experimented a little with glues and finishes this time. The latter because of the Padauk bleed problem with light woods.

Woods: padauk ebony holly and birch ply

Tools: router table saw drum sander

That is one fine box. I will have to try the mitre box system.

Great to see you here. Of all your many wonderful boxes, this one is a favorite. Something about the colors selection, grain direction, and general warm feel of it. Love it.

Also, there’s a nice group of folks over here. :-)

Well worth re-visiting Martyn and still one of my favorites of yours as well…
Did you have to polish it up for the Photos?
I’ve found them to be dust magnets over time…

I am still in love with this box since you posted it some times ago. It’s high on my “to build” list with the Inverted World and Sands of Mars.
