Old project - Guitar

This was the first guitar that I ever made. It’s made from poplar and painted with krylon spray paint. The neck is an eBay item. It still plays very well. It has actual Gibson pickups so it sounds fantastic thru my Marshall stack. It taught me a lot about building guitars and took over 4 months to complete. I would never part with it even with the dozens of mistakes that I now know how to avoid. I have gone on to build over 20 electric guitars and have repaired over 200 instruments for people over the years.

Beautiful work Chris. I would really like to build a stringed instrument just for the challenge, but my total lack of musical ability always dampens my enthusiasm.

You should go for it mike, I knew nothing of how to play when I started. I play a little now when I can get my left hand to work that is. After the first couple I took lessons then the repairs forced me to really learn to play so when people were asking questions, set up etc, I would know what they were talking about. You can get kits now for the DIY that takes a lot of the guesswork out, cheap too. For under $150 you can build a playing quality kit. http://www.diyguitars.com.au

Is it through neck? I thought Gibson style was through neck. Looks awesome. A lot of fun with that thing, I bet.

Chris, I know nothing about guitars but it looks really neat.

Thorreain ...

Not all Gibson’s are through necks Brian. This one has a bolt on neck, which is one of the hardest parts of the build. Getting the neck pocket straight, level, square, and full contact for sound transfer can be challenging, never-mind that tension from the strings needs to be a strong joint. You all should try building one, there a lot of fun to build and play!
