I don’t do anything to my pallet wood before building with it. Am I suppose too?

Not much prep work, sand it down and rip any edges straight if needed.

I don’t do anything with mine either. I look for newer or some aging signs. I dont take anything black in color

Cut the main boards out of the pallet and toss them in the corner for a few weeks, I’ve gotten a number of them that weren’t fully dry. After that joint and plane and build. I’ve made a dozen rocking dinosaur bases out of red oak pallet wood and never had to do more then let it dry a little and use as normal.

I remove any sign of old wood by ripping planing and cutting off before dimensioning to size. Some people use the raw wood then add a finish to seal it. I prefer to see the true grain before building.

Most are pine but look at the markings on the pallet. You can identify any chemicals in the wood online via the markings.
Pallets are endlessly recycled. Some may have nasty chemicals embedded

Kelly ...

I treat it like any other reclaimed wood.

Tony,
as you can see others think quite a lot of Pallet timber, including myself, so I was wondering if you would consider changing the title to a more socially acceptable name?

Take a look at this dumpster recovery.

I burn it in the biomass boiler to heat the shop. Except for the occasional Obeche ones that come through. If a pallet was made out side the uk it has to be treated with pesticides to kill pests and the ones made in the uk are such a poor grade of spruce, larch, Scots pine or the likes that they really are not worth the time and effort to bust up
