A little something just for yourself.

Forum: Woodworking

As a professional woodwork I cannot remember the last time I made something just solely for my enjoyment (a gouge handle was the last thing I made myself in 2014)

I have a very busy schedule in the coming months but I plan to take a weekend at the end of October and make a project all for me.

I guess my question is this how often do other woodworkers take time to make a project just for yourself?

Dreaming of a sawmill, feels like a museum. Thanks for looking Adam.

As for me it’s kinda rare that I get to build things for my wife and I, but this last week I had enough free time to make some simple things, a screen door, a couple basic file cabinets, and some household repairs too. Lot’s of folks want to go pro as far as woodworking goes but they don’t think about that it means you don’t get to make what you want ,you only get to make what the customer wants most of the time.

That is so true Jim. I’ve got loads to make for our house. My wife is still waiting for a set of show jumps. There is fencing all round the farm that is falling down and I need to replace the garden gate. Oh and I’ve got two hen houses to build. I just don’t get time

I use to make stuff to gift friends and people I know.

I kept everything I made the last 2 years. I did not feel I can let go. Probably because the amount of work that went into them and also the amount of learning I went through.

The project I am about to finish will stay in our home. I put a lot of effort into it. The kids helped me too; so it is special. Not to mention the cost of material…

I have plan for 2 more "substantial projects this year, work and family permitting. Both are for my very own enjoyment. I hope I can pull them off.

To stay sane, I find it necessary to find play time. Be it time to clean up, to mess with an idea, etc. Just time off from the grind.

Madts.

Ian, the fact that you children helped you an for no other reason you should keep that piece and I’m sure it will in time become something that is a family heirloom because the kids helped you with it. So long as you do those big projects to the best of your ability then they will be good enough.

Madts I used to get play time myself it’s all gone a bit nuts now though and I do not get time to fire the lathe up. Next weekend I will do just that and have a day where I play with nice timber.

Sad as it may sound , the last thing I built for my self was 2 wheel chair ramps . I can still walk , but I can’t do stairs unless absolutely necessary .

I turned my first carving mallet last night on my new old lathe. Just for fun. But now I have a carving mallet (and a conversation starter/ender).

Good topic. Most of my projects are for my home or I’ll build something out of necessity for my shop. I’m just in the process of building a desk for myself right now, which has been both out of necessity and has been a fun project to build for myself

A couple things I have made for myself is a drafting desk and a chair. The desk is really handy and the chair is so comfortable, it has become an afternoon napping spot. Hey us old guys need to recharge.

Jack that looks brilliant. I don’t dare have a chair like that in my shop because I would get nothing done.

Nice set up , comfy looking chair .

When I was a professional woodworker (boat builder) I didn’t have a lot of time to build much just for me either but I remedied that when I retired. Maybe more than “a little something” but after ten summers on the water, I can say that it is the best thing I ever built for myself by a country mile.

I’m still awaiting the time to build the project just for me. Need a new tool box but I guess it’s just going to have to wait
